Mastering Verbs of Change in Spanish

1. Convertirse en (to become)

  • "Ella se convirtió en médica." (She became a doctor.)

2. Volverse (to become / to turn into)

  • "Se volvió muy hábil en ajedrez." (He became very skilled at chess.)

  • Typically used for changes in characteristics or conditions that are somewhat stable.

3. Llegar a ser (to become)

  • "Llegó a ser famoso por sus inventos." (He became famous for his inventions.)

  • Often used for achievements reached over time.

4. Ponerse (to become / to get)

  • "Se puso triste al oír las noticias." (She became sad when she heard the news.)

5. Hacerse (to become)

  • "Se hizo vegetariano el año pasado." (He became a vegetarian last year.)

  • Often used for changes resulting from one’s decision or effort, usually more deliberate than "volverse".
