THE STORY
His name was Enrique and he would be about 32 years old, I did not know him very well but we had met a couple of times and he seemed nice, normal and polite. Enrique, like all the rest of us who got together to play chess at the Bar el Jirafo liked to joke about paying for his rounds and he was very good at chess. I liked him.
One day a guy came to play who was a friend of Rosa, a regular player. The guy had dark skin and thick curly hair, he had a black beard and dressed in white, his name was Benito.
Benito said that he liked chess a lot but that it had been a while since he had played and that Rosa told him that every Wednesday we met at El Jirafo to play, obviously we welcomed him since we were always open to meeting new people and talking about chess.
I remember that day we did a competition of 6 minutes per game, we had to play 4 games each and the games were designated by drawing lots, there were 12 of us and each one of us put 3 euros, the winner would take 50%, 25% would be for the second and the other 25% we would leave as a common fund to buy more boards. We always did the same thing.
That day there was a tie for first place and that had never happened before because we would not only have a winner by games won but by time and Enrique and Benito not only won their 4 games but they did it in the same time, something out of the ordinary, unusual, so we decided to make a tiebreaker game between the winners to see who would be the winner. This time to ten minutes. We thought it was the fairest thing to do.
Enrique had not met Benito when he arrived and only saw his face when it was his turn to sit across from him. For whatever reason or experience Enrique didn't like Benito's appearance at all and decided to look like a real asshole.
- I'd rather lose and be eliminated than play against a gypsy. - he said out loud for all of us to hear.
- But ....si I am not a gypsy. - replied Benito while laughing
- You look like one, and that's enough, I'm not playing with you," said Benito, ending the conversation.
That was said in front of the 12 people who were looking at us without knowing what to say, some laughed to make it seem like it was a joke but it wasn't. Enrique got up from the board and left the table. Enrique got up from the board and left.
He looked like a real asshole.
